Founding of the Society
The Harborne Society was founded on the 4th May 1960. "Everyone concerned with the traditions and the future developments of Harborne" was invited to the inaugural meeting via over 5,000 leaflets and posters distributed widely throughout the village. So great was the public's response that the meeting overflowed into the 'The Junction' public house where the proceedings were relayed but even then it was not possible to accommodate everyone and, according to the report in next day's 'Birmingham Post' people, "eavesdropped" through open windows.
The inaugural meeting had been called by a group of local residents who had already formed themselves into a committee under the forceful leadership of Charles Parker, the pioneering B.B.C. radio and television producer.
Aims and Objectives
From time to time the Constitution has been modified to reflect changing circumstances and practical experience. However, the fundamental aims and objectives of the Society have remained steadfast and they are:
